The numbers refer to the length that clipper guards or blades leave the hair after being cut. Most clipper guards are numbered in eights of an inch. The general idea is that since the average rate of hair growth is 1/8" per week, each clipper guard is one week apart in terms of hair growth. Blades are numbered differently.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_hai…It is not clear how long you want the top or how closely the back and sides are to be tapered. A taper is usually achieved clipper or shears over comb rather than with clipper guards. The best way to describe a style is with photos. The hairdressers can figure out the lengths to cut the hair to achieve the style in the photo. It won’t be the same length for every head of hair. It depends on the density and coarseness of the hair. regular taper cut:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_hai…http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/55c5c15…ttp://oi54.tinypic.com/1445gn5.jpghttp://books.google.com/books?id=SyvUJSd…ivy league(long crew cut):worn spiked up….http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/45368d8…ttp://oi50.tinypic.com/1fdywx.jpgttp://oi46.tinypic.com/sgpjs7.jpgworn down and brushed to the side…http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/d2e9725…medium crew cut:http://books.google.com/books?id=x0EEAAA…http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/ae21821…ttp://oi48.tinypic.com/2i209b6.jpgttp://oi49.tinypic.com/iqzl80.jpgshort crew cut:http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/dfbf10e…Some barbers consider that all crew cuts should have a flat top, so it is best to not rely on words alone for even a widely recognized style like a crew cut.flat top crew cut:ttp://oi48.tinypic.com/f0dumb.jpgttp://oi50.tinypic.com/2ymzhq8.jpgttp://oi48.tinypic.com/k4b29f.jpgttp://oi50.tinypic.com/2v33tok.jpgSearch the internet for images of football(soccer)star Lukas Podolski for examples of ivy league and crew cut styles. A minute dab of control wax aka butch wax will keep the hair looking well groomed at crew cut and ivy league length. A butch comb also helps with grooming the short pomp styles- the small, flat, plastic, oval, pocket brushes that one finger fits through and barbers sell for about a dollar. A boar bristle military brush is usually available for a few dollars and while too large for a guy to carry in his pocket, is nice to have at home.ttp://oi55.tinypic.com/xf83tc.jpgttp://oi52.tinypic.com/f10bon.jpgThe answer at the following link describes the short styles:Good Luck!

It goes from 0 (no guard) to 8. 0 is as close to your scalp the clippers will get, 1 is almost bald (you can still see your scalp but it’s not completely bald), 2 is a little longer (really really short), 3 is a little longer than that, etc. They can also do half numbers w/o switching the guard. So if you want a number 3.5, they’d use a number 3 guard, and they can adjust the clippers so it’s a 3.5.
